State Fair 2024 - Fine Arts Building

Friday, August 23, 2024

Our next stop was the Fine Arts Building. This is always one of Dale's favorite places to visit. Mine too. Following are some of the pieces we found notable.

COLD DAY, HOT CHEESE by MICHAEL ANDERSON, Minneapolis, Digital Print. I liked this one because it's a cool shot but also because Matt's is in our neighborhood.

STANDING GREEN WING TEAL by JOE SCHNEIDER, Shoreview, Wood carving/Acrylic

SUNLIT ALLEY by JANE MEYER, Minneapolis, Colored pencil on paper. Dale and I particularly liked this one because it looks to much like the alleys in our 100 year old neighborhood.

MAGDALENE by DANIEL VOLENEC, Eden Prairie, Oil on panel.

QUEER by MIKE WELTON, Minneapolis, Oil on canvas

THE FALLS by DAVID NEMO, Shoreview, Oil on linen panel.

SUMMER HEAT by MAT OLLIG, St. Bonifacius, Oil on Canvas

TOASTED by SUZANNE HOWE, Robbinsdale, Oil on gesso board.

ODESSA by NICHOLAS HARPER, Minneapolis, Oil and mixed media on panel.

PORTRAIT by BUCK HOLZEMER, MINNEAPOLIS, digital print

State Fair 2024 - Old Iron Show (Machinery Hill)

Friday, August 23, 2024

Our first stop was Machinery Hill, or, as it is now known, the Old Iron Show).

From the State Fair website: "Reminiscent of the former Machinery Hill, the Old Iron Show gives fair guests an opportunity to get up-close for demonstrations and displays of beautifully restored, rare antique farm equipment. Learn about the history of the machines, their use in farm fields, the manufacturers of yesteryear, the dedicated, talented restorers in Minnesota, and best of all – marvel as the engines roar to life!"

The following appeared on the Minnesota Public Radio website (click on link below for the change of Machinery Hill to the Old Iron Show):

State Fair 2024 - We Made It!

Friday, August 23, 2024

We made it! No broken leg to keep me away this year. We left home at about 5:15. Dale took his usual route of Hennepin Avenue to Larpenteur and we easily parked in the north lot.  We've always had good luck with parking there on later weekday afternoons.

We walked to the north entrance and got in easily as the lines at the ticket booths were only two or three. people deep. It was about 80 degrees and the humidity was at the lower end of being uncomfortable. Walking slowly helped.

Alas, Not Meant to Be This Year

The 2023 Minnesota State Fair has come and gone. I had every intention of going. I had surgery on my broken fibula bone above my ankle in mid-August. I thought after having the splint removed last Thursday and switching to a boot that'd I'd be off crutches but I was oh so wrong. They want me in the boot AND using crutches for 4 more weeks and I've found that it's just too uncomfortable going long distances with crutches so, alas, the Fair was not meant to be this year. I'm extremely disappointed.
