State Fair 2017

Friday, September 1, 2017

Disappointed I was only able to make it to the fair once this year. I was hoping to match my record of 3 visits back in 2014.  Alas, multiple visits were not meant to be this time around. With kids in the district where I teach starting school now before Labor Day and with teacher workshop week overlapping the first few days of the fair, it's hard to get there as much as I'd like.  Never-the-less, the one visit Dale and I made this year was hugely enjoyable - lots of food and Garrison Keillor's (supposedly) last appearance at the Grandstand made it well worth while. Of course, there's always next year. The Fair still makes me feel like a kid and having to wait for another year is just as hard as it was when I was a lad.

By the time Dale and I made it to the Fair today we were STARVING! I headed straight for the Pronto Pup stand. Dale found a huge kebab called the Minnekebab which he loved - lots of meat and vegetables.

The corn stand is always a favorite of mine.  Still only $3 an ear.
This guy's corny.

State Fair 2017 - Corn Palaces and Butter Queens by Pamela H. Simpson

I found this book a few weeks back at Garrison Keillor's bookstore in St. Paul. Being that I'm such a fan of the crop art and and the butter heads at the Minnesota State Fair, I had to pick up the book. It was an interesting read.  I never knew how far back in time food art actually goes and that many mid-western fairs in places such as South Dakota and Kansas had palaces decorated in corn, potatoes and more. The Minnesota State Fair has been  long been notable for its butter sculptures especially, since 1965, the butter heads of Princess Kay and the Milky  Way and her court. Along with providing advertising for the products of these industries, the corn palaces and butter sculptures spoke to the food overabundance  of the midwest promoting it as a prosperous place for people to move to and work. In other words, food was so plentiful that there was enough to "waste."

State Fair 2017 - Tom Thumb Mini Donuts

Friday, September 1, 2017

After the performance at the Grandstand, Dale and I began the walk back to the north parking lot. On the way I stopped for a bag of mini donuts and for the first time in a number of years, I finished the whole bag! I think the key is not eating as much food prior and also having a two hour forty-five minute break that the Minnesota Show allowed.

State Fair 2017 - The Great Big Wheel

Friday, September 1, 2017

Got some shots of the new Ferris Wheel from our Grandstand seats for Garrison Keillor's Minnesota Show.

The Great Big Wheel, as it's called, is one of the tallest Ferris wheels in all of North America. It's 15 stories tall and at the highest point a rider is 150+ feet high. I've heard tell that it takes 12 trailers to move it around to different fairs.

This photo of the Ferris wheel taken as Dale and I were leaving the fair. It looks great at night. No, we did not ride it. Will it be back next year?

State Fair 2017 - Attendance

Monday, September 4, 2017

Looks like the day Dale and I visited this year was a record breaking day. Friday, September 1, 2017 had an attendance of 187,066 people which is 4,140 more people than the same day last year and is a new attendance record!
