Fair 2015 - Visit #1: Alligators, Corn, Cookies... Oh, My!
Saturday, August 29, 2015
The next stop on our list was Sweet Martha’s Cookies
for Shay but the lines were so insanely long that we passed and decided to try
again later. We hit the Corn Roast stand and Bayou Bob’s in the meantime. I got
corn while Cathy got fried alligator. She let me try some. I’ve never had it
before. It was an odd combination of tasting like chicken but with a
consistency somewhat flakey, like fish. Very tasty, though.
At this point, Mike
took Shayla off to attempt another try at Sweet Martha’s Cookies. I got in line
for a Pronto Pup and while waiting got a call from Dale who is up on Madeline
Island for a board meeting. It was great to hear from him. I was so sad that he
couldn’t be with us but I don’t think he would have enjoyed today’s crowds. We
usually attend the fair together on weeknights when there’s a bit more elbow
room.

First Visit 2014 - Corn Roast Stand
Through texting, we all figured out we'd meet at Juanita's Fajitas near the Grandstand. The above photo was taken near that spot. Notice in the background to the left is the sweet corn stand. It's been a few years since I've had an ear and it was divine.

Corn Roast Stand
Didn't make it to the Corn Roast stand for corn-on-the-cob this past trip. I'm obviously craving it since it's been on my mind this past week. I will say when I was there last Friday I ate reasonably although that's not to say that I didn't eat some pretty heavy food. I stopped eating well before I hit my limit so I guess there's always a first time for something at the Fair.

Minnesota State Fair 2001 - Food

Dale and I had never been to the fair together before. We decided to go in 2001. Shortly before the fair we had started a new diet called Body-for-Life. It was a great diet that focused on eating six small reasonably portioned meals a day that were balanced between protein and carbohydrates. The part of the diet I really liked is that it offered a free day where you could eat as much of anything you wanted including junk foods. That year we made sure that our trip to the fair fell on our free day. We worked out at our downtown Minneapolis gym that morning and then hopped a downtown bus that dropped us off right at the gates of the fair. Just before catching the bus we stopped by a coffee shop and each got a chocolate chocolate chip muffin and a personal sized bottle of orange juice. At the fair we each got the foods we really wanted to eat. I know for sure that I got the Tom Thumb mini-donuts, a corn dog and corn on the cob. I know I got a lot more but that's all I can remember for sure. We stayed until the late afternoon/early evening and took a bus back to our car in downtown Minneapolis. It was quite a day of food and fun.
